What is Cataract?
Cataract is the clouding of the natural eye lens which is typically clear. With age , color of the lens changes varying from yellow to brown or white color. Clouded vision caused by cataract can lead to hazy vision and cause hindrance in daily activities. People with cataract finds difficulty in reading, recognising faces and driving a car at night.
What is Cataract Surgery?
Cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure to remove a cloudy lens from the eye and replace it with a clear artificial lens, restoring clear vision.
What should you expect when undergoing cataract surgery?
- Pre-operative Evaluation: Your ophthalmologist will conduct a comprehensive eye exam to assess your vision and overall eye health. This helps determine the most suitable treatment plan.
- Surgery: Cataract surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes about 15-30 minutes per eye. The cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens implant.
- Duration of hospital stay: Cataract surgery is a day care procedure. Our patients usually go home within few hours after the surgery but if someone wishes to stay back, we do provide a comfortable stay at our hospital with post operative care by our experienced staff. We also ensure hassle free admission and discharge procedure.
- Recovery: Most patients experience improved vision within a few days after surgery. It's normal to have some discomfort or mild irritation initially, but this usually resolves quickly.
- Follow-up Care: Regular follow-up visits are essential to monitor healing and ensure optimal visual outcomes. Your doctor will provide instructions on post-operative care and any necessary medications.
What are the benefits of cataract surgery ?
- Improved Vision: Cataract surgery can significantly improve vision, allowing you to resume daily activities with clarity and confidence.
- Enhanced Quality of Life: Reduced dependency on glasses & clear vision enhances independence and overall quality of life, enabling you to enjoy activities such as reading, driving, and socializing.
- Reduced Risk of Complications: Untreated cataracts can lead to complications such as vision loss and increased risk of falls. Surgery helps mitigate these risks and preserves eye health.

Which lens to choose for cataract surgery?
In cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens of the eye is replaced with an artificial lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL). There are several types of IOLs available, each offering different benefits and considerations. Here are some common types of IOLs used in cataract surgery:
- Monofocal IOLs: These are the most common type of IOLs used in cataract surgery. Monofocal lenses have a fixed focal point, typically set for distance vision. While they provide clear vision at one distance, patients may still require glasses for other distances, such as reading or intermediate vision.
- Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs: EDOF lenses provide a continuous range of clear vision from near to far, similar to multifocal lenses but with fewer visual disturbances like halos and glare. They are designed to provide good vision at intermediate distances as well, making them a suitable option for patients who prioritize computer work or other tasks requiring intermediate vision.
- Multifocal IOLs: Unlike monofocal IOLs, multifocal lenses have multiple focal points, allowing patients to see clearly at different distances (near, intermediate, and far). This reduces the need for glasses after surgery, but some patients may experience halos or glare, particularly in low-light conditions.
- Accommodating IOLs: Accommodating lenses are designed to mimic the natural focusing ability of the eye's natural lens. They move or flex within the eye in response to changes in focusing distance, providing clearer vision at multiple distances. While they can reduce the need for glasses, not all patients achieve perfect near vision without glasses.
- Toric IOLs: Toric lenses are specifically designed to correct astigmatism, a common refractive error that can cause blurred vision. These IOLs have different powers in different meridians of the lens, allowing for precise correction of astigmatism. Toric IOLs can improve both distance vision and astigmatism correction, but patients may still require reading glasses for near vision. Best suitable for those with high astigmatism error.
The choice of IOL depends on various factors, including the patient's lifestyle, visual needs, ocular health, and surgeon's recommendation. During the pre-operative consultation, your eye surgeon will discuss the available options and help you choose the best type of IOL for your individual needs.
